While the movie portrays true events on how an outside party tried to stop the darkness, this fictional drama portrays an inside party sister Aloysius who doubts that a priest father Flynn is taking advantage of a student. It is amazing how well developed these characters feel in 50 short pages.
Learning this, Aloysius reveals to Sister James that the decisive phone call was a fabrication. Doubt is still a fantastic read, and I’m certainly going to read more of Shanley’s plays, but I wish there was a bit more to this play. Zeal describes Sister Aloysius also – but zeal of a different sort.

If Father Flynn had been proven innocent, then we would see Sister Aloysius as the play’s villain, the forces of openness and virtue having triumphed over the church’s long catalog of overzealous homegrown persecutors. The fact that it doesn’t provide easy answers is a strength, not a weakness, and it stays true to its central, eponymous theme. There is no reason to take tough stands and make hard choices. As timely as this subject parabel circathere was the obvious risk that this would come off preachy is that a pun? This play tackled the issue of Catholic priests exploiting young boys, but it is set in when the issue was parble by the church and the nuns, if they did happen to notice anything, were seen as inferior to the men and, thus, unable to stop the problem.
Father Flynn’s got an agenda and maybe a little bit of a schmarmy personality shaney then Sister Aloysius is the opposite, being “cold as ice” and unmoving, unsympathetic – it’s thought provoking to see how they both desire Sister James’ validation. And, therefore, to doubt. But Shanley doesn’t construct an easy dragon for vanquishing, on either side of this contest. It is an inspired study in moral uncertainty with the compellingly certain structure of an old-fashioned detective drama.
What a great play! With no actual proof that Father Flynn is or is not innocent, the audience is left with its own doubt. That feeling of emptiness, where something has occurred but we are not sure of its exact nature, readmits us to the community of doubt where we began the play. The characters as well as monologues in the play are well developed and well written.
The writing is excellent, and the details included are ambiguous enough to perfectly balance each dobut so that you really do not know what story to believe.
Miller the name was changed in the film. Nicholas Church School, in the Bronxduring the fall of Gripping drama all the way! It rolls along with the momentum of conflict growing all the time stakes being raised and plenty of gasp-inducing moments for the audience.
I don’t think anything was left out We recognize her as the stereotypical Catholic school nun who rules over her charges with an angry kind of devotion and puts the smell of brimstone in their nostrils.
